What is Bhangra:-
Bhangra is a form of dance which was originated by farmers in the villages of Punjab hundreds of years ago. It is fun, entertaining and also a high-energy workout activity. In two words, it is Fun+Exercise! If you want to enjoy the moment, then it is a dance. If you want to focus on its workout part, then this form of dance is used by many participants for health, fitness and wellness goals as well. Being happy, positive, cheerful and lively are other key components of the dance. As the spirit of happiness is enlivened and celebrated throughout the workshop, therefore many of Gurdeep’s students also started calling it a “Happy Dance”. On top of everything, Bhangra brings people together, creates a community, and builds inter-cultural bridges.
Composition or Format:-
Gurdeep’s classes are a fun introduction to bhangra dance and culture, as well as a great fitness activity. During the workshop, Gurdeep teaches 4 to 8 top bhangra moves one-by-one. To make the learning process easier, he breaks down all the moves into several smaller pieces. When all the the pieces are put together and moves are well practiced, everybody dances the moves to uplifting Punjabi Bhangra music. Gurdeep’s class spaces are inclusive to all ages, genders, orientations and backgrounds.
Gurdeep Pandher is a Whitehorse (Yukon, Canada) based Bhangra artist and author. He creates performances pieces that bring people from all backgrounds together to promote inclusivity and diversity. His performances and videos have crossed many borders and are watched by millions from all over the world. Gurdeep’s works have been published by many national/international media, art and governmental organizations. He is also a dance instructor at the Yukon College in Whitehorse.
What Kind of Folks Attend Gurdeep’s Workshops?
All kinds. This workshop is also suitable for the complete beginners and for those who have absolutely no experience or idea what the bhangra dance is! This workshop will also be a great opportunity for you to decide if you would like to continue to follow passion for bhangra dancing and fitness in future. Anyone who is 10 years old or older can join the workshop. We love small children too, but it is always wonderful to have a separate workshop only for little ones. Gurdeep is often invited to schools for workshops, so your kid’s school can also consider hosting this type of workshop for the school students. You can suggest your kid’s school to contact Gurdeep via this contact form! Gurdeep has an excellent and positive experience working with both primary and high schools in Canada. References are also available from the schools which previously invited Gurdeep for lessons.
What to Wear?
Any kind of comfortable clothes are OK, but a T-shirt or tank-top with yoga/exercise pants or shorts are most suitable for Bhangra dance jumps. Please come in workout or running or sports shoes! Please do bring a bottle of water!
